Freedom Lawns 2008
Laurel Lobovits and I have been photographing the Freedom Lawns, gardens and yards for the Freedom Lawn Contest, which is held each year. The contest has been held since 1996 and we are still looking for more entries which ends on July 30th.
It has been an inspiring experience especially this year, as we have been pushing for people to be, not only more organic in their land care, but to compost, raise vegetables with the flowers, and use what land they have effeciently. Yesterday as we drove around looking for potential contestants, and after approaching the owners, we continue to be impressed with their passion, their youthful spirits which are ageless. For instance, there is Carleeen who spoke of her 24 year old son, she looked hardly a day over 25, then there was Julie, who does all the gardening and planting, free of charge for her condo and makes sure they don't use pesticides on the lawn which is located right on the banks of LIS and then there is Vincenza who works every inch of the small piece of land, who comes from the Big Apple and teaches the neighbors children about gardening, and raises over 80 pounds of tomatoes along with all her herbs and flowers right to the edge of the street, and not to forget Nancy who does one spectacular job of managing flower beds in the front and when invited to see her back yard which stretches at least 150 or more in the back has created more rooms in which to enjoy nature. They all are beyond inspiring, we want to learn from them and feel such delight in having discovered them.
I would like to say, so far, it has not been the 'mcmansions' that execute these qualities of demonstrating such respect for their land and their environment, we haven't seen a cloths line as we have in the above women's yards, a mix of flowers and vegetables, converting grass land for gardens and we still see ocassionally that dreaded yellow sign, that says we use pesticides.
Those who still are wedded to the three step chemical use, need to know that those chemicals invade their neighbors yards and contaminate their neighbors' children and pets which in turn give them the potential for cancer and of course themselves.
I do want to mention, that it is hearwarming to see yards and the front lawns that are freedom lawns as they have a good mix of clover and crabgrass and whatever, horrah to all of you who do not think it is cool to have that perfect lawn!!

only cartoon ever nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize 1939
Peace On Earth, Good Will To Men.
A few years ago I discovered the MGM cartoon Peace on EarthToon Heads. Since then it has been one of my favorite holiday cartoons. This 1939 cartoon was written by Jack Cosgriff, Charles McGirl and Khat Harman and directed by Hugh Harman and is the only cartoon ever nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize. Before reading any further I want you to watch the cartoon.
while watching an episode of the Cartoon Network's
This cartoon was created prior to America's involvement in the Second World War by people who served in the First World War. This amazing story takes you on a journey:
From Cute and Fuzzy,
To Man's inhumanity to man.
To a climax.
To a resolution.
And back to Cute and Fuzzy.
The cartoon was remade by William Hanna & Joseph Barbera in 1955 as Good Will to Men and was also nominated for the Best Short Subjects Oscar.Labels: goodwill, Peace

Greenwich bans pesticides from school athletic fields
one of the things that most amazes me as a mother and physician, is why chemicals that have shown up as risk factors for cognitive/learning disorders are used in school settings! Well chalk one up for greenwich, they have made the decision that a bit of crabgrass doesn't balance the risk to their kids health.

Feel free to either save them for yourself or, better yet, send them to friends and post them on your own blog. If you have pictures of past green events, let me know and I can either post them on the Flickr page or create a group if anyone already has their own Flickr account.
Speaking of photography and living a green lifestyle, I thought I might share a quick summary of the green differences between digital and film photography.
Starting on the side of digital photography, there are quite a few perks. No toxic chemicals are necessary for film developing nor is producing rolls upon rolls of film. It's possible to upload 1,000s of photos in a matter of minutes, if not seconds, which certainly cuts down on energy usage. From a photographers standpoint, digital images are easier to maintain and there's no worry of the film getting damaged or possibly fading over time (not to say there isn't the worry of, say, your computer crashing and losing everything you ever knew or loved). However, there are downsides. Film cameras, without much question, win the quality competition. A digital camera that is affordable for an amateur photographer just doesn't have the quality that an affordable film camera has. Don't get me wrong, digital cameras are getting better, but that's part of the problem. More and more digital cameras are being made and that does take up resources, not to mention they run on batteries which are full of toxic badness. Digital cameras tend to get tossed out, but film cameras can often be repaired or at least replace only a portion of it. Essentially, the contest is a close one, but as someone who loves photography, I'd go with a film camera any day. They are just about as green as digital in the long run and the quality is just a hundred times better. Not to mention Craig Arnold's new and wonderful creation, born from his love of photography and recycling...

oh on the subject of incentives for using your own shopping bag, i forgot to mention that in france they have a line for people who bring their own, when its busy that line is always shorter, like a commuter lane on the highway, trust me that is a decent incentive in a busy supermarket~
