Milford's Big Easy - Mardi Gras Masks: DIY Craft Ideas

Mardi Gras Masks: DIY Craft Ideas - Easy Mardi Gras Masks for Kids
Making Mardi Gras masks with your children is a wonderful way for parents to bring the excitement of Mardi Gras into their home. There are tons of options for making Mardi Gras masks with kids, from the simple to the more complex.

Easy Mardi Gras Mask Idea for Kids: Animals
There are a variety of options for making animal Mardi Gras masks with your children. The easiest choice is to purchase zoo animals paper plates from your local grocery store. Punch holes into the sides of the plates and use string to turn the plate into a mask. Cut out eye holes and mouth holes, as well. This is the perfect easy animal Mardi Gras mask option. It is ideal if you are having a Mardi Gras party and need to make a bunch of masks quickly, without a mess.

You could take this idea and make it slightly more interactive by using plain paper plates, and allowing children to decorate their own animal mask with paint, glitter, glue, nail polish, and crayons. While slightly more messy, it's a great way to spend the afternoon!

Easy Mardi Gras Mask Idea for Kids: Masquerade Masks
This activity is ideal for slightly older children, though younger children can enjoy and appreciate it with a little help from adults. You'll need:

Thick straws (not bendable)
Cardboard or heavy cardstock
Scissors
Glue
Tape
Green and purple paint
Glitter (preferably green and purple)
Feathers
String

Take the cardboard or heavy cardstock and cut out an eye mask shape. Cut out eye holes, as well. Then, allow children to decorate with paint, glitter, and feathers. Use the internet to show examples. Finally, use glue and tape to attach the straw to the side of the mask so that children can hold it up to their face and carry it around. Be sure to allow plenty of time for the mask to dry before using.
